John Scofield about learning songs: knowing and navigating the changes by ear. A good way to test how well the sounds and their progression are internalized * it is not about the patterns these produce on the fretboard *
is to limit one’s ‘muscle memory’ e.g. by using one finger only to ‘see’ if you can still ‘hear’ and find the notes – minus fixed fretting hand patterns, e.g. training wheels like the modes, CAGED, your individual system […].

These are useful methods and concepts – for technical aspects, while learning. They also come in handy to execute more complex, planned passages, examples would be the outro lick of my stroll, same with the added note with an ‘extra’ finger, to harmonize the line.

The chords were again played with one finger 😛
